Now that you're sold on the benefits of Seadek, let's dive into a basic step-by-step process of removing your old boat carpet and preparing your floor for Seadek installation by Luxe Marine:

Step 1: Removal of Old Carpet

Whether you tackle this task independently or enlist the help of a professional removal service, the first step is to remove all old carpet from horizontal flooring areas designated for Seadek installation. While vertical walls adorned with carpet may not always require removal, opting for Seadek application on these surfaces can provide a seamless and cohesive look throughout your boat's interior. Take your time, and consult your Luxe Marine installer if needed.

Step 2: Surface Preparation

Once the old carpet has been removed, it's time to prepare the surface for Seadek installation. This involves thoroughly cleaning to remove any carpet glue residue and smooth or sand out imperfections. For fibreglass floors, we recommend using Rustoleum Enamel paint for sealing, while wood floors benefit from a sealer primer like Kilz followed by a top coat of low-sheen paint. Choosing a paint colour that complements your chosen Seadek colour is essential for a seamless finish. We find most stick to white or black in this case, but it is completely up to you. Just be aware, that gaps in panels and around hatches (where it allowed for the thicker carpet) will show the floor colour beneath.

Step 3: Consultation and Installation

During the consultation phase with your Seadek installer/scanner before installation, discuss any additional finishing work required for any surfaces that will show through and ensure that the surface preparation meets the necessary standards. Sometimes you can use your new Seadek flooring design to hide seams or other finishing issues. We always recommend consistent communication with your designer while removing your carpet and preparing your floor. Proper surface preparation is crucial for the longevity and performance of your Seadek flooring. Seadek will only last as long as the material it is laid onto. We recommend using quality paints and taking your time with the preparation phase.
